Checking for hail damage on your roof is easy, if you know what youre looking for.
Here well go over one way a do it yourself (DIY) home owner can inspect their roof for storm, hail and or wind damage.

Ok diving right in now.
First things first, be safe climb on the roof using a sturdy ladder. If its a steep roof, get a professional to inspect it for you, last thing we want is a broken leg, arm or worst.
Given that you have an asphalt shingle roofing system, what youre looking for is a few things:
- Granule loss at the ridge caps and or the field shingles. Granule loss can be an indication of hail damage thus reducing the life span of the roof.
- Imaging a rock or an ice cube hitting the roof, the markings will be anywhere from pea size to golf ball to baseball size hits. When hail hits, it will create a divot on the shingle and knock off granules. You might have to get on your hand and knees to see this if you are not trained. The shingles might be hot as heck, so be careful.
- Take a look at turbines, skylights, gutters and window screens, these items may have evidence of hail damage as well.
- Spotting wind damage is a bit more difficult, well leave that for another post. The easiest way to spot wind damage is to look for bent or creased tabs and blown shingles. Blown shingles can cause major roof issues and expensive interior damage and should be repaired as soon as possible.
